Motherless Child Motherless Children #1 Motherless Children Trilogy Glen Hirshberg 9780765337450 Books
I read everything I can get my hands on by Glen Hirshberg. Never enough. Occasionally, as with "Motherless Child," I have to hunt down and purchase a used, pristine library edition; pristine, because no one seemed to take it off the shelf and give it a try. Then I sit and devour the book in one sitting, as I did again with "Motherless Child," afraid to finish consuming it too quickly, unwilling to stop. This book is close to perfect. It's creepy, literary, poetic, strong, allegorical, haunting. Every sentence glistens like a drawer full of polished silverware. And many of them cut like a knife. There are scenes (I want so badly to tell you about them, but I prefer you find them untainted by expectations) that had me holding my breath as I read them--so ominous, so beautiful, so original--that they stayed with me the next day, and the next, and still lingered several weeks later.
Think of how you felt when your favorite award-winning television series aired its final episode and the music and themes and acting all filled you with a sense of wonder and marvel and satisfaction. If you want that feeling again, go track down "Motherless Child," chase away all electronic and social distractions, and sit in a well-lit favorite reading chair and enter Hirshberg's world.
Really. He's that good.

Glen Hirshberg's "Motherless Child" is easily comparable to Peter Straub's "Ghost Story" or perhaps more appropriately to Stephen King's "Salem's Lot". The pacing of the plot and the ethereal realism of how the two main characters become who they are in a kind of Thelma and Louise go Vampire scheme is disturbing, because all of us have known Natalie and Sophie at some point in our lives.
Without giving too much away, these two women have a bad night in the truly metaphysical sense after being victimized by a sickening and monstrous vampire nicknamed "The Whistler". The creature's conversations with its mother are, for me, the most horrifying parts of the book. As other reviewers have noted aptly, this is not "Twilight"; it is full blooded Gothic horror with a touch of realism about it. As we watch the two women trek through the wastelands of the United States, Hirshberg's talent in drawing a character's inner life become apparent. We can already see where Sophie would do something Natalie wouldn't, even before their very real troubles begin.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I have the feeling that many who gave this a negative review haven't read a whole lot of horror novels or stories.
The other catchline for this book is "just when you thought it was safe" or "just when you thought the ending could be predictable". Unless you skip ahead I highly doubt you will see the conclusion of this book coming. Hirshberg pulls no punches and this story is genuinely hypnotic.
I loved this book! The writing is fantastic and the word choices are superb!
New favorite vampire story. New favorite author. You really need to experience his work. Great characters. Great story telling.
Exceptionally refreshing take on a once tired Genre. This breathes fresh life into the meaning of " Vampire"
Sophie and Natalie's adventures are harrowing, dynamic and at times extremely funny. Their relationship grabbed me at the heart of those awkward, lifetime long, ever changing and messy friendships that never really die.
I liked this book, although not enough to continue the series. Sometimes I found the action sequences confused, jumbled and hard to follow. But the characters are like able enough, especially Jess.
Glen Hirshberg is a wonderful writer, everybody should know that. No matter what he writes about, this novel should be read at least for its literary style. This novel is full of beautiful images. Yes, it's a vampire novel, but Hirshberg doesn't care for the Ghotic tradition à la Dracula. His vampires use Twitter, and they are very human and moving. This is a beautiful novel which looks more like a road movie, than anything else. The climax of the novel is absolutly fantastic. If there is a vampire novel one must read, Motherless Child is the one. Don't miss it. It's a hit. Thanks Glen for writing so well and for having such a brillant imagination.
