Livy Campbell misses her older brothers who have left home to fight in the Great War in Europe. She left college and headed back home to help on the farm. At home she was reunited with her boyfriend who had come home from the war after being wounded. He was not the same as Livy was very unhappy with him and his chronic inebriation. While at a neighborhood dance, Livy was approached by a nice looking gentleman for a dance. It was her birthday and Robert, her boyfriend, hadn't shown up yet. So she agreed to the dance. He was a nice gentleman. He asked her about herself and was interested in her desire to become a teacher. He shared with her that there was a position in his town that she might be interested in. She applied and was hired. The underlying issues is that the town is very highly populated with German-Americans who are being harassed for being German and therefore, in the town's eyes, suspect of spying for Germany. The main characters are likable and very easy to relate to. The story line is interesting, as a baby boomer of German decent, I found the story particularly interesting for the discrimination that was shown to German-Americans. It was an excellent read.

Hope at Dawn Of Love and War Stacy Henrie 9781455598809 Books Reviews
Hope At Dawn was a great read. I really liked the history and that this book was set during WWI (I haven't read many books in this time period).
The writing was fantastic. I really felt for the characters and all they had to go through - especially Friedrick. The romance story was sweet and I liked how the ending had closure.
Overall, I loved Hope At Dawn. The story moved at a slower pace, but I still loved it. A great book that made me learn new things about WWI and what life was like back then. I definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to this author's next book!

It is a great book but should never have been sold. It was an advance copy book and has right on it that it should not be sold. Someone didn't look.
must read
Very engaging story telling. The period in history was effectively dramatized and gained momentum as the story progressed. The only criticism is that at times rather predictable.
I loved the author's writing as well as her approach to the bias' from both sides of peoples emotions during wars. How hard it would be to come to the USA, adopt this country only to have the world at war with the land from which your parents immigrated. the prejudices abound. This book takes place during WWI. It made me reflect what happened to the Japanese during WWII. Prejudice and hatred is ugly.
I was so excited for this book to come out and was not disappointed when I read it. It was a great story set in a time period that is often overlooked in the shadow of WWII.
Hope at Dawn is set during The Great War, World War I as it came to be known. Livy is a young woman trying to make her way in a world turned on edge by war and limited opportunities for women at that time. She secures a teaching job in Hilden, a town several hours distance from her family. She becomes friends with the young man, Friedrick, who is the janitor and caretaker of the school who has not had to go to war because he is the provider for his family and takes care of the family farm.
Livy loves her job but is concerned by the prejudice shown the German citizens and students of Hilden - among which is Friedrick and his family. This prejudice stems from fear created by the war with Germany and leads to altercations with neighbors and business owners. It eventually leads to violence that Livy and Friedrick are caught in the middle of.
There is so much good to say about this book. the detail to history is great and eye-opening. we see how easily fear causes people to become irrational and suspicious - and mean. The romance between Liv and Friedrick is really sweet and its fun to see how they grow together and stand by each other. I really liked the pacing and message behind the story and the glimpse it gives us of what life was like for Americans during the early 1900's. This wasn't just an entertaining read - it was an educating and informative one. I totally enjoyed every word and can't wait for the rest of the series.
