Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books. On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for Kindle and in a rash moment, purchased them all.
I devoured My Brother Michael and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid and I feel as if I could navigate that part of Greece based solely on her descriptions of the geography.

My Brother Michael Mary Stewart 9780449207352 Books Reviews
I had forgotten how much I loved Mary Stewart's books. I read this for the first time in my preteen years, and have thoroughly enjoyed rediscovering the story. There's a slower pace in the books written then, one that lets you plumb the depths and undercurrents of the tale. I was glad to see the beginnings of a strong female protagonists. Camilla braves her fears and takes a car delivered to her by mistake, in search of the mysterious Simon, for whom the car was rented. By sheer luck k, she finds him, and thus starts an adventure that will test Camilla's courage and skills as she helps Simon unravel the mystery surrounding the death of Simon's brother Michael. If you've never had the pleasure of reading mysteries from the Golden Era, give this a try. Don't be put off by the slower pace or the assumptions made about women. It is an accurate representation of the time in which it was written, and it does bring g back many pleasant memories.
My old copy of this book is held together by a leather strap; this is a much loved book of mine, so I'm thrilled to have it in an ebook edition so I can reread it to my heart's content.
This book isn't as famous as some of Stewart's other works, but it's one of my favorites.
The heroine, Camilla, is different from other Mary Stewart women as she is very unsure of herself; she lacks self confidence. She ended an engagement to one man and now is traveling in Greece by herself. Due to a mix up, she drives a car to Delphi and meets the hero, Simon. Simon is in Greece looking to solve the mystery of his brother Michael's death during WWII.
There is adventure, mystery, murder and treasure in this book. Plus a little romance between the leads.
I loved Mary Stewart books when I was young and I still love them today. Even though this book was published in the late 50's, there is a timeless quality to it that still resonates today.
I highly recommend this book. It's just a great read.
I am so very glad that Mary Stewart’s early works have been re-printed; I am enjoying revisiting her wonderful novels so many decades later and I find special appreciation for Ms. Stewart’s extraordinary writing. I found My Brother Michael to be good a read now as when I first read it decades ago. Ms. Stewart’s work holds up so well because of the way she intertwined great research on the setting as well as the beautiful descriptions of the vibrant European locations.
This time the setting was in Greece, where we find the heroine, Camilla Haven, on holiday by herself following a cancelled engagement. In the last days of her vacation, Camilla wants to see the oracle city of Delphi before returning to England. However, a strange turn of events puts her in the path of a mysterious man who is determined to get to the bottom of his brother Michael’s death, a soldier who was wounded and stranded in Greece during WWI. This book is primarily a mystery with some romance interspersed.
One main reason I enjoyed this book so much was because of the way Stewart depicted the growing attraction between Camila and Simon, there was no overt sexual descriptions to distract the reader from the main plot. There was attraction between the main characters but it was left up to the reader’s imagination to draw conclusion of the potential love between the two. The main focus was on Camilla becoming more and more entrenched in a series of events that changes the life of a young woman who once lamented, Nothing ever happens to me."
I first found this book at a flea market when I was in junior high. I loved it then and I am so happy to see it on FINALLY! Out of all of Mary Stewart's books if I had to pick an absolute favorite it would be this one. Although for me to try and pick one favorite out of Mary Stewart's books is like asking a mother to name her favorite child out of all of her children...it's a nearly impossible request. I realize it is dated now and it was dated when I first read it, but I love it anyway. Thanks to Mary Stewart I got to travel via her books to places I never dreamed I would be able to go and when I did finally get to go to some of these places, such as Greece, I carried with me Mrs. Stewart's observations and I thought of this book often while I was there.
Camilla Haven is a wonderful character and very much a woman of her time, which I believe is 1955? I can relate to her because many of the women in my family were like her as I was growing up. Then there is Simon. How can anyone not like capable, unflappable Simon? I also enjoy the way Mrs. Stewart uses the country or landscape as almost another character in the story. I reread this book on a regular basis and have throughout my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
